Bury director jailed after failing to produce accounts for company which owed more than £200,000 in tax
29 October 2024
A Bury director has been jailed for failing to produce accounts for his company, which owed more than £200,000 in tax.
Lee Byrne, 50, of Hollins, was sentenced to 16 months in prison at Minshull Street Crown Court on Friday, 28 October 2024.
Byrne was the sole director of LB Installations (NW) Ltd, a company that provided insulation services.
An investigation by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) found that Byrne had failed to file the company’s accounts for the years ending 31 March 2016, 31 March 2017 and 31 March 2018.
As a result, HMRC was unable to collect more than £200,000 in tax from the company.
Byrne was interviewed by HMRC officers in September 2018 but failed to provide a reasonable excuse for not filing the accounts.
He was subsequently charged with three counts of failing to deliver company accounts.
Byrne pleaded guilty to all three charges at an earlier hearing and he was sentenced on Friday.
HMRC’s Assistant Director of Criminal Investigation, Nicola Woolman, said: “Lee Byrne deliberately failed to file his company’s accounts, which is a legal requirement.
“This meant that HMRC could not collect the tax due.
“Byrne has now been jailed and I hope this case sends a clear message that HMRC will not tolerate this kind of behaviour.”
