Data on Commuting
Berlin. The Federal Statistics Office (Destatis) has published new data on commuting in Germany. In 2022, 19.1 million people commuted to work daily, 14.4 million of whom commuted within the same municipality and 4.7 million between municipalities. The number of cross-border commuters was 371,000.
The average commuting distance was 16.6 kilometers, with commuters in rural areas (21.4 kilometers) traveling significantly longer distances than those in urban areas (15.1 kilometers). Berlin had the shortest average commuting distance at 12.4 kilometers, while Brandenburg an der Havel had the longest at 35.7 kilometers.
The most common mode of transport for commuters was the car (63.1%), followed by public transport (22.2%), walking (9.9%), and cycling (4.8%).
The data also shows that commuting times have increased in recent years. In 2022, the average commuting time was 34 minutes, up from 32 minutes in 2017. Commuters in rural areas (42 minutes) spent significantly more time commuting than those in urban areas (30 minutes).
The Destatis data is based on the Microcensus, a representative sample survey of the German population.
