GOV UK: Social landlords continue to build new homes, according to RSH statistics
29 October 2024
Social landlords in England built over 30,000 new homes in the year to March 2024, according to new statistics published today (29 October 2024) by the Regulator of Social Housing (RSH).
These figures show that the sector is continuing to make progress towards the government’s target of building 300,000 new homes a year by the mid-2020s.
Of the 30,310 new homes built by social landlords in 2023-24, 77% were for affordable rent, 16% were for social rent, and 7% were for shared ownership. It represents a rise from 24,110 new homes built by the sector in 2022-23.
The RSH’s latest Quarterly Statistical Release also shows that social landlords have increased their investment in new homes. In 2023-24, they invested £9.9 billion in new homes, up from £8.5 billion in 2022-23.
The RSH’s Chief Executive, Fiona MacGregor, said:
“These figures are a testament to the hard work and dedication of social landlords across the country. They are playing a vital role in helping to meet the government’s target of building 300,000 new homes a year by the mid-2020s.
“I am particularly pleased to see that the sector is continuing to invest in new affordable homes. These homes are essential for people on low incomes and those who are struggling to get on the housing ladder.”
The Minister for Housing and Planning, Gavin Barwell, said:
“I am delighted to see that social landlords are continuing to build new homes at a record rate. This government is committed to working with the sector to ensure that everyone has access to a decent and affordable home.”
