Thompson Okanagan Communities Receive over $725,000 to Create Memorable Outdoor Experiences and Support Sustainable Tourism
[Kelowna, British Columbia] October 29, 2024 – The Governments of Canada and British Columbia are investing over $725,000 in six projects to enhance outdoor tourism experiences and support sustainable tourism in the Thompson Okanagan region.
This funding is provided through the Canada-British Columbia Inclusive Tourism Partnership Program, which aims to create more inclusive and accessible tourism experiences for all Canadians.
“These projects will help create memorable outdoor experiences and support sustainable tourism in the Thompson Okanagan region,” said Randeep Sarai, Member of Parliament for Surrey Centre and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Economic Development and Official Languages (FedDev Ontario). “Our government is committed to supporting tourism businesses and communities as they adapt to the changing needs of visitors.”
“The Thompson Okanagan region is a world-renowned destination for outdoor recreation,” said Melanie Mark, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport. “These projects will help us build on our strengths and create even more opportunities for people to enjoy the outdoors while supporting local businesses.”
The six projects receiving funding are:
- City of Vernon: $200,000 to develop a new outdoor adventure park in the Okanagan Rail Trail Corridor.
- City of Kelowna: $150,000 to create a new accessible trail network in the Knox Mountain Park.
- Regional District of North Okanagan: $125,000 to upgrade and expand the Coldstream Creek Trail.
- City of Kamloops: $100,000 to develop a new mountain bike trail in the Kamloops Bike Ranch.
- City of Revelstoke: $75,000 to create a new Nordic ski trail system in the Revelstoke Nordic Centre.
- Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association: $75,000 to develop a marketing campaign to promote sustainable tourism in the region.
“These projects will help us attract more visitors to the Thompson Okanagan region and support the local tourism industry,” said Glenn Mandziuk, President and CEO of the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association. “We are grateful for the support of the Governments of Canada and British Columbia.”
The Canada-British Columbia Inclusive Tourism Partnership Program is a five-year, $50 million program that supports projects that enhance the accessibility and inclusivity of tourism experiences in British Columbia.
