GENEVA/KHARTOUM (26 October 2024) – A senior UN official on Wednesday decried the recent attacks against civilians in Sudan’s Al Jazirah state, calling for an immediate end to the violence.
“I am deeply concerned by the reports of attacks against civilians, including women and children, in Al Jazirah state,” said Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
“These attacks are unacceptable and must stop immediately,” he added.
According to reports, at least 15 civilians were killed and dozens more injured in attacks carried out by armed men on several villages in Al Jazirah state on Monday and Tuesday. The attacks reportedly involved the burning of homes and looting of property.
Türk called on the Sudanese authorities to take all necessary measures to protect civilians and hold those responsible for the attacks accountable.
“The perpetrators of these heinous crimes must be brought to justice,” he said.
The High Commissioner also urged the Sudanese authorities to address the root causes of the violence, including poverty, inequality and lack of access to justice.
“It is essential that the Government of Sudan takes concrete steps to address the underlying grievances that have led to these attacks,” he said.
Türk also called on the international community to support Sudan in its efforts to end the violence and protect civilians.
“The people of Sudan have suffered too much,” he said. “They deserve to live in peace and security.”
The UN Human Rights Office in Sudan is closely monitoring the situation and stands ready to provide assistance to the Sudanese authorities in their efforts to protect civilians and uphold human rights.
