‘Spiralling crisis’ in Haiti demands continued global attention: WFP

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – The escalating humanitarian crisis in Haiti requires sustained international attention and support, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) warned today.
“Haiti is facing a spiralling crisis that has left millions of people struggling to feed themselves,” said Jean-Martin Bauer, WFP’s Country Director in Haiti. “The country is grappling with political instability, soaring inflation, and a severe drought that has devastated crops and livestock.”
According to WFP’s latest assessments, an estimated 4.7 million Haitians, nearly half of the population, are now facing acute food insecurity. This number has risen by 1.5 million in just the past six months.
“Families are skipping meals, selling their belongings, and resorting to desperate measures to put food on the table,” said Bauer. “Children are particularly vulnerable, with over 1 million under the age of five at risk of malnutrition.”
The crisis is being exacerbated by the ongoing political instability in Haiti, which has hindered the delivery of humanitarian assistance and made it difficult for people to access basic services.
“We urge all parties in Haiti to work together to find a peaceful resolution to the current crisis,” said Bauer. “The people of Haiti have suffered enough and deserve a chance to live in peace and dignity.”
WFP is calling on the international community to scale up its support for Haiti, both in terms of funding and expertise.
“We need urgent assistance to provide food to those in need, as well as to support local communities in building their resilience to future shocks,” said Bauer. “The people of Haiti cannot be abandoned in their time of crisis.”
