New Research Investments in the Transmission of Respiratory Infectious Diseases
October 25, 2024 – Ottawa, ON
The Government of Canada is investing \$10 million in new research to better understand the transmission of respiratory infectious diseases, such as influenza and COVID-19.
The funding will support a new research network that will bring together scientists from across Canada to study how respiratory viruses are transmitted through the air, how they interact with the human immune system, and how they can be prevented and treated. The Grand Challenges Canada will manage the funding.
“This investment will help us to better understand how respiratory viruses spread and how we can protect ourselves from them,” said the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Health. “This research will help us to develop new vaccines, treatments, and public health measures to keep Canadians safe.”
The research network will be led by Dr. David Fisman, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Toronto. Dr. Fisman said that the network will focus on three key areas:
- Understanding how respiratory viruses are transmitted through the air
- Studying how respiratory viruses interact with the human immune system
- Developing new vaccines, treatments, and public health measures to prevent and treat respiratory infections
“This is a critical investment in research that will help us to better understand and prevent respiratory infections,” said Dr. Fisman. “This research will have a significant impact on the health of Canadians.”
The research network will be funded for five years. The funding will be used to support research projects, training programs, and knowledge translation activities.
The Government of Canada is committed to investing in research that will help to improve the health of Canadians. This investment in respiratory infectious disease research is an important step towards protecting Canadians from these diseases.
