Federal government invests nearly $350,000 in active transportation in the Outaouais region
GATINEAU, QC, Oct. 25, 2024 /CNW/ – The Government of Canada is investing in active transportation infrastructure in the Outaouais region to make it easier and safer for residents to walk and cycle.
Today, the Honourable Mona Fortier, Minister of Mental Health and Addictions and Associate Minister of Health, on behalf of the Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities, and Marie-France Lalonde, Member of Parliament for Orleans, announced funding for two projects under the Active Transportation Fund.
The first project will see the construction of a new 2.5-kilometre multi-use pathway along chemin d’Aylmer in Gatineau. The pathway will connect existing trails and provide a safe and accessible route for cyclists and pedestrians.
The second project will improve the safety and accessibility of existing cycling infrastructure in Chelsea. The project will include the installation of new lighting and signage, as well as the widening of some sections of the pathway.
These projects are part of the Government of Canada’s $400 million Active Transportation Fund, which is investing in infrastructure that encourages Canadians to walk and cycle more often.
“Our government is committed to investing in infrastructure that makes it easier and safer for Canadians to get around,” said Minister Fortier. “These projects in the Outaouais region will encourage more people to walk and cycle, which has benefits for both their health and the environment.”
“These projects will make it easier and safer for people to get around our community,” said MP Lalonde. “I am proud that our government is investing in active transportation infrastructure that will benefit the residents of the Outaouais region for years to come.”
“The City of Gatineau is pleased to receive this funding, which will allow us to continue our efforts to make our city more walkable and bikeable,” said Gatineau Mayor Maxime Pedneaud-Jobin. “This project will provide a safe and accessible route for cyclists and pedestrians, and will help to promote active transportation in our community.”
“The Municipality of Chelsea is grateful for this funding, which will allow us to improve the safety and accessibility of our existing cycling infrastructure,” said Chelsea Mayor Caryl Green. “This project will make it easier for people to walk and cycle in our community, and will help to promote active transportation.”
