NICHI Announces Manitoba Recipients of Funding to Advance Critical Indigenous Housing Projects

Winnipeg, MB (4 August 2023) – The National Indigenous Collaborative Housing Initiative (NICHI) announced today that it has approved funding for four Indigenous-led housing projects in Manitoba, totaling more than $20 million. These projects will create 120 new affordable housing units for Indigenous families and individuals in urban, rural, and northern areas of the province.

The approved projects include:

  • Onyx Landing Affordable Housing Development, led by Ka Ni Kanichihk Inc., will create 30 new supportive housing units for Indigenous families and individuals experiencing homelessness in Winnipeg.
  • The Niisaachewan Housing Initiative, led by Niisaachewan Anishinaabe Nation, will create 30 new affordable rental units for Indigenous families in the community of Nelson House.
  • The Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre Expansion, led by Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre Inc., will create 30 new affordable housing units for Indigenous families and individuals in the community of Berens River.
  • The Pembina Valley Habitat for Humanity Project, led by Pembina Valley Habitat for Humanity, will create 30 new affordable homeownership units for Indigenous families in the communities of Winkler, Morden, and Altona.

“These projects are a critical step towards addressing the urgent and unmet housing needs of Indigenous people in Manitoba,” said NICHI CEO, Gordon Peters. “By providing safe, affordable, and culturally appropriate housing, we can improve the lives of Indigenous families and individuals, and help them to thrive in their communities.”

The funding for these projects is provided through the Government of Canada’s Rapid Housing Initiative, which aims to create new affordable housing units quickly and efficiently. NICHI is a national non-profit organization that works to increase the supply of affordable housing for Indigenous people in Canada.

“We are grateful for the support of NICHI and the Government of Canada,” said Ka Ni Kanichihk Executive Director, Donna Sinclair. “This funding will allow us to create much-needed housing for Indigenous families and individuals who are experiencing homelessness in Winnipeg.”

The construction of these projects is expected to begin in the fall of 2023 and be completed by the end of 2024.
