President of the Bundestag Bärbel Bas at the 3rd Parliamentary Conference on the International Crimea Platform in Riga
Riga, 25 October 2023 – Bundestag President Bärbel Bas called for the Russian annexation of Crimea to be consistently rejected. “The illegal annexation of Crimea and the ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine is and remains a blatant violation of international law,” stressed Bas at the 3rd Parliamentary Conference on the International Crimea Platform in Riga. Russia’s war of aggression is also an attack on the European peace order and on democracy itself.
“Ukraine and the Ukrainian people can count on our full solidarity,” assured the President of the Bundestag. “We will continue to support Ukraine politically, financially and militarily as long as it takes,” Bas continued.
Bas also emphasised the importance of Russia’s accountability for war crimes. Those responsible for war crimes must be held accountable before international courts, she said.
The 3rd Parliamentary Conference on the International Crimea Platform was organised by the Ukrainian Parliament and the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy. Participants also included representatives from parliaments of European states, including Great Britain, Poland and Lithuania, as well as from the USA, Japan and Canada.
The International Crimea Platform
The International Crimea Platform is an initiative of the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. It was launched in August 2021 and serves as a coordination platform for international efforts to de-occupy Crimea. The platform brings together representatives from Ukraine, the EU and NATO countries, as well as other interested states. The International Crimea Platform aims to increase international pressure on Russia, to support Ukraine in the de-occupation of Crimea and to ensure that the issue of Crimea remains on the international agenda.
