The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Conor Burns, has hailed the benefits of integrated education during a visit to Enniskillen Royal Grammar School in Fermanagh.

The Minister met with pupils, teachers and members of the school’s Integrated Education Steering Group to discuss the positive impact that integrated education has had on the school and the wider community.

Enniskillen Royal Grammar School is one of the longest established integrated schools in Northern Ireland, having been founded in 1981. It is a popular and successful school, with a strong academic record and a commitment to providing a nurturing and inclusive environment for all its pupils.

Minister Burns said:

“I am delighted to have had the opportunity to visit Enniskillen Royal Grammar School and to see first-hand the benefits of integrated education.

“Integrated education is a vital part of our education system and I am committed to supporting its growth and development. It is good for our children and young people, and it is good for our society.

“I commend the staff and pupils of Enniskillen Royal Grammar School for their commitment to integrated education. They are a shining example of how integrated education can create a more inclusive and tolerant society.”

The Minister’s visit to Enniskillen Royal Grammar School is part of a wider programme of engagement with schools and other stakeholders to promote the benefits of integrated education.

Integrated education is a model of education that brings together pupils from different backgrounds in the same school. It is designed to promote mutual understanding and respect, and to help to break down barriers between communities.

There are currently 68 integrated schools in Northern Ireland, catering for over 25,000 pupils. The government is committed to supporting the growth and development of integrated education, and is providing funding to help schools to establish and maintain integrated status.
