WASHINGTON – NASA invites media to attend a signing ceremony for the Artemis Accords during the upcoming XXVII Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting in Santiago, Chile, May 30 through June 3. The Artemis Accords are a set of principles to guide the peaceful exploration and use of space that were developed by NASA in consultation with international partners.

The signing ceremony is expected to take place:

Date: June 1, 2023 Time: 3 p.m. CLT (1 p.m. EDT) Location: CentroParque, Av. Presidente Riesco 5555, Las Condes, Santiago, Chile

The ceremony will be attended by NASA Deputy Administrator Pam Melroy, Minister of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation of Chile Silvia Díaz Acosta, and leaders from other signatories to the accords.

The Artemis Accords are a set of principles to guide the peaceful exploration and use of space, especially for activities related to the Moon. The accords were developed by NASA in consultation with international partners, and they are based on the Outer Space Treaty of 1967 and other international agreements.

The accords cover a wide range of topics, including:

  • The peaceful use of space
  • Transparency and public release of data
  • Interoperability of systems
  • Protection of space heritage
  • Mitigation of orbital debris
  • Development of space resources

The Artemis Accords are not legally binding, but they are intended to create a common understanding among the signatories about how to conduct space activities in a safe and responsible manner.

To date, 23 countries have signed the Artemis Accords. The United States and Russia are not signatories.

Media interested in attending the signing ceremony must RSVP to Morgan Brittany at 202-358-1753 or morgan.n.brittany@nasa.gov by May 15.
