Significant federal infrastructure improvements completed at Radium Hot Springs in Kootenay National Park

Parks Canada News Release: July 12, 2023

Significant federal infrastructure improvements to facilities and infrastructure at Radium Hot Springs in Kootenay National Park have been completed. Upgrades began in May 2022 and included investments to improve accessibility and visitor experience.

The $11 million project included enhancements to the following areas:

  • Bathhouse: The bathhouse underwent renovations focused on improving accessibility and safety, including the addition of a wheelchair lift and accessible washrooms. The pool area received new, non-slip flooring and upgraded lighting.
  • Change rooms: The change rooms were updated with new lockers, showers, and accessible features.
  • Natural pool: The natural pool was drained and repainted, and the surrounding area was re-landscaped to improve drainage and accessibility.
  • Walkways and trails: The walkways and trails leading to the hot springs were repaved and upgraded to meet accessibility standards. The new pathway from the overflow parking lot to the springs has been widened and flattened to allow for easier access.
  • Signage: New signage throughout the area provides clear directions and information for visitors.
  • Overflow parking lot: The overflow parking lot was expanded with additional stalls and improved lighting.

“These upgrades will significantly improve accessibility to the hot springs for visitors of all abilities and enhance the overall visitor experience,” said Paul Zrum, Visitor Experience Manager for Kootenay National Park. “This project is part of Parks Canada’s ongoing commitment to investing in our national parks and providing visitors with safe and enjoyable opportunities to connect with nature.”

The Government of Canada is investing $3 billion over five years to support infrastructure work in national parks across the country. This investment will address important visitor infrastructure needs, such as accessibility, health and safety upgrades, and climate change adaptation, while protecting the ecological integrity of these special places.
