New Orleans Man Sentenced for Methamphetamine Conspiracy

NEW ORLEANS – U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans announced that BRIAN ANTHONY JOHNSON, age 35, a resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, was sentenced on February 9, 2023, after previously pleading guilty to conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine.

U.S. District Judge Ivan L.R. Lemelle sentenced JOHNSON to 168 months in prison, followed by five years of supervised release.

According to court documents, the Drug Enforcement Administration (“DEA”) New Orleans Field Division initiated an investigation, which was assisted by the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, into the distribution of methamphetamine in the New Orleans metropolitan area. During the investigation, the DEA identified JOHNSON as a member of a drug trafficking organization that was distributing multi-pound quantities of methamphetamine in the region.

One particular incident that the DEA investigated involved JOHNSON conspiring with others to distribute approximately five pounds of methamphetamine from Arizona to New Orleans via the United States Postal Service. JOHNSON and his co-conspirators planned to retrieve the parcel containing the methamphetamine once it arrived at a local post office.

On August 19, 2021, law enforcement officers intercepted the parcel at the post office and replaced the methamphetamine with a simulated substance. JOHNSON and co-defendant JOSEPH ANTONE JOHNSON, JR. arrived at the post office later that day to retrieve the parcel. They opened the package and discovered the simulated substance. JOHNSON and JOSEPH ANTONE JOHNSON, JR. were arrested on the scene.

JOSEPH ANTONE JOHNSON, JR. previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and was sentenced to 120 months in prison.

U.S. Attorney Evans praised the work of the DEA, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, the Louisiana State Police, and the United States Postal Inspection Service in investigating this matter. Assistant United States Attorney Brandon Long is in charge of the prosecution.
